Trek Checklist

Roy Midland Stake Trek Checklist
In pioneer times, it was estimated that it would take the handcart companies approximately 13 weeks to cover the 1300 mile journey from Nebraska to Utah.  As of 4 May 2011, there will be 13 weeks left before our stake trek.  In order to help you prepare for that wonderful opportunity, we have put together the following 13 point checklist for each prospective trekker.  Once you have accomplished a task from the checklist, you can put the number in the corresponding calendar week at the bottom.

1. *Start/continue a physical fitness program
2. Turn in your trek registration form (due 5 June)
3. Get a 5-gallon bucket and personalize it so it will be easy to identify (can be purchased at WalMart, Home Depot, Lowes, etc.)
4. Get your pioneer clothing
5. *Watch a pioneer video (Legacy, Faith in Every Footstep, Mountain of the Lord, etc.)
6. *Start/continue your scripture study and personal prayer program
7. *Find a personal challenge from General Conference and accomplish it
8. Check out the Fire of the Covenant blog and Facebook page
9. Break in your hiking/walking shoes
10. *Read the Joseph Smith History in the Pearl of Great Price
11. Read from the scriptures about a group that took an exodus (Moses and the Israelites, Lehi and his family, etc.) and consider the following questions:
a. Why did they leave?
b. what did they leave behind?
c. What were they hoping to find?
d. How can this apply to your life?
12. *Write in your journal about your expectations for trek
13. Encourage and invite a youth from your ward who is not going on trek to re-consider and join us

* Requirement from the Fire of the Covenant

_____      Week 1 (4-10 May)                 _____      Week 2 (11-17 May)               _____ Week 3 (18-24 May)

_____      Week 4 (25-31 May)               _____      Week 5 (1-7 Jun)                    _____ Week 6 (8-14 Jun)

Be Thou An Example

I have heard of saints and prophets since I was young.
Till death they did triumph in what they have done.
They acted with great courage, withstood every test.
In faith they rest, angels of men, awake desire to be like them.

Did following Christ become their desire
Through strict obedience or a refiner’s fire?
What did they give up to serve Him, their wealth, their time, their lives?
Were these offerings a sacrifice or giving of their souls to Christ?

Be thou an example, like so many others who’ve gone before,
In word, conversation, in charity in spirit, in faith, in purity,
to become what He wants me to be.

As I ponder on these questions, I know why they did their part.
As my testimony strengthens, I know what’s in my heart.
I choose this day to serve Him, in faith, in deed, in word.
I don’t know what of me He’ll require, but I give my life, my desire!

Be thou an example, like so many others who’ve gone before,
In word, conversation, in charity in spirit, in faith, in purity,
to become what He wants me to be.

Did they know the power of their actions
would strengthen so many generations, generations!

Be thou an example, like so many others who’ve gone before,
In word, conversation, in charity in spirit, in faith, in purity,
to become what He wants me to be, to become what he wants me to be.

Trek Music - "I Am a Stripling Warrior"

Instrumental MP3 file: http://downloads.sugardoodle.net/I%20Am%20a%20Stripling%20Warrior.mp3
(This file actually goes for three verses but we will only be singing the two listed below for the trek. Right click on link and select "Open in New Tab" to listen to music while keeping lyrics visible.)

I am a Stripling Warrior

Two thousand stripling warriors, strong and brave and true
Had faith that would not waver because their mothers knew.
Though young they trusted fully. They stood for what was right.
My mother tells this story and I trust with all my might.

Chorus:
I am a stripling warrior. I hold the shield of faith
That comes from my own mother. It will guide me all my days.
She armed me with the sword of truth and hope in God above.
I will follow her example to trust in our Father's love.

She prays to Heav'nly Father with a faith so pure.
I know I can not doubt Him because my mother's sure.
The stirring in my heart proves that I have learned the truth:
I am a stripling warrior. I have faith beyond my youth.

Repeat Chorus
